This is Marcus Filly. He is one of the big dogs in the Crossfit world. I just listened to a very long interview with him. He was asked by the interviewer questions about supplements, protein and how much you can absorb when taking in protein. I LOVED Marcus’ answer.

Marcus basically stopped the interviewer and was like ‘that’s the big question isn’t it?” He went on to talk about how gut health is foundational and that you can eat completely clean, use supplements for recovery or preworkout that are amazing, but it won’t matter a bit if you cannot absorb it. He pointed the interviewer to the importance of gut health and how reversing the damage of the gut was primary to one’s long term success in fitness.

And, if you wonder what his background is, he graduated Summa Cum Laud with a degree in molecular biology and did a year in med school before deciding he did not like med school’s focus on disease. He wanted to work more with people on wellness.

So, all you CROSSFIT peeps out there who think all you need is creatine or clean protein: LISTEN TO MARCUS!!!! Your gut needs to be healthy so you can actually absorb the nutrients you are eating. I am sure it will come as no surprise that he recommended all people take a quality probiotic.

And did I mention he takes a magnesium supplement every day?  This guy is just awesome and shows how important it is to stay on top of your gut health game when you are an athlete.
